SO WHAT IS THE ONEPLUS 5 SMARTPHONE?

The OnePlus 5  is a smartphone made by OnePlus. It is the successor to the OnePlus 3T released in 2016. The OnePlus 5 was officially unveiled during a keynote on 20 June 2017. It runs Oneplus’s custom Oxygen OS which looks similar to the stock Google OS found on the Pixel phones but with a litter bit more custom look.

ONEPLUS 5: DISPLAY

Now, the display is usually what people look for straight away when they consider a smartphone. And with many different types of screens out there, it can be hard to choose. The Oneplus 5 is rocking a 5.5 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080p (1920 x1080 pixels) with a PPI of 401 and an aspect ratio of a standard 16:9.  The display also supports Night Mode, Ambient Display, Lift Up display and a Reading Mode. Protecting the display is a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Overall, the display does the job right but don’t expect it to be anything like the superior Samsung Galaxy S8 display which is currently the best display on the market right now.

ONEPLUS 5: DESIGN

The design of the Oneplus 5 looks ALOT like the iPhone 7, like no joke. Though, surprisingly it feels much more comfortable than an iPhone 7. The OnePlus 5 has an anodized metal back like its predecessors, the OnePlus 3 and 3T. The handset is currently available in matte black and gray colors. There is a beautiful continuous hard line wrapped around the OnePlus 5 which adds a horizon-like division to the phone’s edge. The phone is only 7.25mm thick and with the reduced size, they even managed to improve the battery life by 20%!

ONEPLUS 5: OXYGEN OS

The OnePlus 5 was launched with OxygenOS 4.5 based on Android 7.1.1 and it has since been updated to OxygenOS 4.5.6. The name implies what the OS is all about: simplicity and light. The OS performs incredibly well and does not lag the phone in any way.

ONEPLUS 5: PERFORMANCE

So, as mentioned above the OnePlus 5 rocks a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (Octa-core, 10nm) chip which is the latest from Qualcomm and as expected it performs like a beast. It zips through any application like butter even the more intensive games such as Subway Surfer and 3D oriented games.  The main driver for this great performance is also the Adreno 540 GPU coupled with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and taken all three together (CPU, GPU, and RAM) makes for a seamless and extremely fast experience that beats the iPhone 7 out of the water.

ONEPLUS 5: BATTERY

In terms of battery, the OnePlus 5 has the same battery to OnePlus 3T, 3300mAh battery but battery performance is quite good. It gives around 23–24 hours of battery life with heavy use. It also supports “Dash-charging” which can get you 70% of juice within 30mins. That is insane.

ONEPLUS 5: CAMERA

Coming to the camera, this is where things get mixed. The best part about OnePlus 5 is the dual camera. The primary sensor is a 16 MP shooter and has a f/1.7 aperture with electronic image stabilization(EIS). Now, the secondary sensor is 20 MP and has a wider f/2.6 aperture but this lens has no OIS or EIS. Coming to the photo quality, we can just that it is fantastic and images appear very sharp. It also supports the low-lighting feature but it depends on which sensor you are using. The video camera supports 4K recording if you are into that as well.

SO SHOULD YOU BUY THE ONEPLUS5?

Overall, the OnePlus 5 is ten steps above the OnePlus 3T and improves it in every way. The best part: it is under $550 USD! That is a steal for a phone that can outperform the iPhone 7 and has the latest specs and amazing camera. I would definitely consider this a better choice than the iPhone 7. Though keep in mind that the Oneplus 5 lacks some features such as waterproofing, dust resistance, and expandable storage, but under $550 you can’t complain.
