SO WHAT IS THE XIAOMI MI MAX 2?
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is the latest smartphone offering from Xiaomi that offers some of the top specs with a low price point of around $350 USD.
XIAOMI MI MAX 2: DISPLAY
Now, the display is usually what people look for straight away when they consider a smartphone. And with many different types of screens out there, it can be hard to choose. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has a massive 6.44 inch 1080p IPS screen which has its ups and down. First off, this phone is more of a ‘phablet’ similar to the Note Series from Samsung so make sure your pockets are big. Further, the screen is a regular IPS screen meaning you won’t get those deep blacks and vibrant colours found in the OLED displays such as in the Samsung Galaxy S8. Though, for the price point, the display gets the job done day to day. Also, the phone doesn’t have the ‘near bezel-less’ concept found in the Samsung Galaxy S8 so if you are looking for a bezel-less phone, I would advise the Galaxy S8, Note 8, Xiaomi Mi Mix, or the upcoming iPhone 8 though all these are around $450 more than the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. Overall, if you don’t mind the bezels and the regular IPS display than this display does the job just fine.
XIAOMI MI MAX 2: DESIGN
The design of the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is a mixed bag. In terms of the front design, the big bezels really do stand out though it is understandable that in order to actually do a bezel-less concept requires more investment into new display technologies and Xiaomi isn’t a smartphone powerhouse like Samsung so it wouldn’t be feasible for them to do. But overall the front design isn’t too bad if you get the black colour as none of the sensors shows up as much. Further, the overall feel screams premium thanks to Xiaomi’s full metal unibody design that feels incredible to the touch.
Now, in terms of the rear of the Xiaomi Mi Max 2, here is where the design really shines. With a simplistic rear and super minimal camera bump and the fingerprint reader on the back, Xiaomi has managed to design a superb rear while keeping the camera bump significantly down.
Another fantastic addition that Xiaomi included in the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is the new dual speaker audio system. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 can intelligently switch to dual speak stereo effect when in landscape mode which actually works most of the time pretty well.
XIAOMI MI MAX 2: OS
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is rocking the latest Android OS software, Nougat 7.1.1 and will receive future updates as like other phones. The phone does come with its own custom skin over the android nougat OS as expected like many other Android OEMs, but overall the skin doesn’t slow down the phone at all and actually complements the design.
XIAOMI MI MAX 2: PERFORMANCE
So, as mentioned above the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 rocks Qualcomm’s Snapdragon’s 625 Octa Core CPU clocked in at 2.0 GHz. This CPU coupled with 4GB of RAM and an Adreno 506 650 MHz GPU makes apps, games and multitasking a breeze with the Mi Max 2.
XIAOMI MI MAX 2: BATTERY
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 sports a whopping 5300 mAh battery which is more than sufficient to get you through your day. Given that this is a more budget phone, you wouldn’t expect a high capacity battery in this phone but Xiaomi has done it with the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The company even stated that the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has enough juice for two full days of usage and an hour of charging can get the phone’s battery to 68%. Overall, the battery should get you 18 hours of video and 57 hours of call time which is mighty impressive. Further, it should be noted that the battery is non-removable which may be a deal breaker for some.
XIAOMI MI MAX 2: CAMERAS
Now, in terms of cameras, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has one front 5MP camera and a single 12 MP rear camera with Autofocus and video recording. The front camera is decent at best and the rear camera with only a f/2.2 aperture manages to capture pictures with good colour production but the lack of detail is evident.
In terms of low light, the camera is a mixed bag. Most of the low light shots are noisy which really hurts the image quality. Further, in terms
Further, in terms video quality, in complete day light, it is incredible and with no OIS or EIS most videos end up really shaky. Two cool features are the time-lapse and slow motion feature which actually works quite well.
SO, SHOULD YOU BUY THE XIAOMI MI MAX 2?
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is a great entry level phone that has top specs for a low price. The only gripes that we had with the phone were the large bezels, rear camera quality and video quality. The design, build, display and performance were all top.
